Ending any relationship is never easy, it’s hard and heartbreaking, and when one or both people aren’t ready to move on, it can feel better to just get back together.

Relationships move at different speeds, with some people having an instant spark while others slowly grow over time. Then some die out permanently only to rekindle it again. This on-and-off relationship cycle is very common, with 30 to 60 percent of young adults dating experiencing it.

But can on-and-off relationships work? Usually, they cause emotional distress, or worse, are difficult to describe, leaving unresolved issues to fester.

If you find yourself in an on-and-off relationship, you need to examine the root of the problem and decide whether you should confront the problem or end a good relationship, so that you can avoid suffering. This is a very difficult decision.

There are many reasons why on-and-off relationships happen. Your life may be facing challenges that make it difficult to balance the relationship, and sometimes you just need a break.

Arguments can drive you apart but great chemistry brings you back together, or maybe you just don’t understand what you want from the relationship or you both want different…
